WE MUST DEPLOY ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY TO FIGHT INSECURITY, GOVERNOR LAWAL TELLS UNITED NATIONS

Governor Dauda Lawal has emphasized the pressing need to deploy advanced technology to combat insecurity in Zamfara State and the North.

The Zamfara State Governor and other state governors met with Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, in Washington, D.C., on Friday.

A statement by the spokesperson of the Zamfara Governor, Sulaiman Bala Idris, revealed that the meeting was attended by governors from Zamfara, Benue, Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, and Niger states.

The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina J. Mohammed praised the Governors for their efforts in finding a lasting solution to the region’s problems. “Your presence here indicates a strong desire from the Northern Governors to implement change in their states.

Explaining the Zamfara situation to the Deputy Secretary-General, Governor Dauda Lawal highlighted the crucial role that technology can play in enhancing security and the need for a coordinated effort to harness the power of technology, including the use of artificial intelligence, biometric identification systems, and surveillance cameras.

“We are here with common problems. The major challenge is insecurity, and something has to be done.

“Due to insecurity, agriculture has been impossible. We need assistance in transitioning from peasant farming to advancing agriculture so that we can deploy technology to fight this insurgency. We hope to find solutions to these problems during these meetings. I inherited a dysfunctional state with poor development indices.

“I have declared a state of emergency in education and health. We must take immediate action to address these critical issues; otherwise, our future will be bleak. We require significant support to overcome these challenges and ensure a better future for our people.”

WE HAVE REDEFINED GOVERNANCE IN ZAMFARA, SAYS GOVERNOR LAWAL

Governor Dauda Lawal emphasized that his administration has redefined the ways and operations of governance for the better in Zamfara State.

On Monday, the governor presided over the Zamfara Executive Council meeting held at the government house, Gusau.

A statement by the spokesperson of the Zamfara Governor, Sulaiman Bala Idris, disclosed that the governor, who is the chairman of the council, reminded members of the challenging task ahead in the administration’s rescue mission.

The statement added that the council deliberated on important issues immediately after Governor Dauda Lawal’s welcome remarks.

While addressing the council, Governor Dauda Lawal cautioned members to work as part of a team rather than individuals whose mandates are distinct.

“As we approach 28th May 2024, which will mark our first year in office, it is necessary to take stock of what we have done, how far we have delivered on our mandate to the people of the state, and what needs to be done to improve performance and delivery of the dividends of democracy as we promised during our electioneering campaigns.

“We must take stock to appreciate where we are and plan. We have done well by changing the narratives of what the government is and what a system should be. We are placing the interest of our people first, redefining the meaning of government by reforming and restructuring institutions and ways of doing business. It has not been easy, but we are making progress, even if steadily. We will continue to push through meaningful reforms that will make the government more efficient and meaningful to our electorate.

“The government will succeed more if everyone works as part of a team rather than individuals whose mandates are distinct from one another. I have said several times that you must all work in synergy and avoid a silos mentality. Teamwork is the word; anyone averse to it can not be part of our team.”

WE DID NOT BORROW 14.26BN; IT WAS PROCEEDS OF N20 BILLION LOAN FLOATED BY PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATION, SAYS ZAMFARA GOV’T

WE DID NOT BORROW 14.26BN; IT WAS PROCEEDS OF N20 BILLION LOAN FLOATED BY PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATION, SAYS ZAMFARA GOV’T

The Zamfara State Government has disclosed that the sum of 14.26 billion was not borrowed but part of the proceeds from a 20 billion naira loan floated by the previous administration.

A statement by the spokesperson of the Zamfara Governor, Sulaiman Bala Idris, revealed that no domestic or external loans have been borrowed since Governor Dauda Lawal took office.

“We would like to clarify the Debt Management Office (DMO) report that the Zamfara State Government borrowed N14.26 billion naira.

“Zamfara State Government has never applied for loans or approached the State Assembly or National Assembly for such a request.

“It is important to note that the previous Zamfara state government floated a N20 billion bond but failed to collect the total amount.

“The immediate past government received N4 billion naira out of the 20 billion loans requested for the Zamfara cargo airport project, though the funds were not utilized.

“Upon assuming office, we discovered that the payment terms made terminating the bond impossible without incurring a significant loss for the state.

“The balance of N16 billion Naira out of the N20 billion borrowed by the past administration is the N14.26 billion captured by the Debt Management Office (DMO). The value is reduced due to inflation.

“The bond balance, which is still in a government account, has not been used and will be reserved for the airport project.”
